For one chocolate lover and Scandiphile, Alaine Handa, it was “love at first bite” when she tried her first chokladboll (chocolate ball).
This classic Swedish treat became somewhat of an obsession for her, resulting in a guide to Swedish fika culture and a delicious and beautifully photographed collection of recipes; “In Search of the best Swedish chokladbollar” tells the story of her own fika journey and recipe experimentation, inspired by flavours of the world.
Love at first bite
“The first time I tried a chokladboll was many years again while I was still living in New York. A new coffee spot called Fika opened in my neighbourhood and I remembered that “fika” was a Swedish version of taking afternoon tea, but instead of tea, coffee was the preferred beverage. The chokladboll reminded me of the rumballs I had gown up with as a child in Jakarta.” And so began Alaine’s search for the perfect recipe.
