Recruiting and successfully onboarding international talent is vital for many Swedish employers in today’s global job market. Managing and keeping up with immigration regulations is however no easy task, especially when politics dictate rule changes with far reaching consequences for employers and their recruits.
This guide covers what HR professionals need to know about Swedish work permits for new recruits, including processing times, documentation required and employer obligations.
Application process
The process starts with a formal job offer and applications are submitted to the Swedish Migration Agency via their online portal. In addition to the processing time at the Swedish Migration Agency, both application preparation time and the production of residence permit cards following work permit approval also need to be factored in. The whole process can therefore be broken down into three time periods:
1. Application preparation
It typically takes 3-4 weeks to prepare the application for submission, including advertising the job in the required manner, obtaining a union statement and other documentation gathering.
2. Application processing
For highly qualified roles, processing times at the Swedish Migration Agency usually range from 10 to 30 days from the date of application submission. Other categories of work permit applicants face longer wait times. Holiday periods such as summer and Christmas can also affect processing times.
3. Residence permit cards
Once the work permit application has been approved by the Swedish Migration Agency, applicants who require a visa to enter Sweden will also need to wait a further 3-4 weeks in their home country for their Swedish residence permit cards to be produced and delivered to them before they can travel.
How long does it take?
Factoring in all the above processes, three months is the standard time it takes from job acceptance to job commencement for highly qualified roles. Mistakes or incomplete information in applications can however lead to lengthy delays.
Required Documents
Detailed offer of employment
Passport copy
Proof of insurance
Job advertisement
Union statement
Power of attorney (if using a representative)
Additional documentation is also required for accompanying family members
What is the minimum salary requirement?
The current minimum salary requirement for a Swedish work permit is 80% of the median salary,at least SEK 29,680 per month. However from 1 June 2026, the salary requirement is set to rise to 90% of the median salary approximately SEK 33,390 per month.
HR’s responsibilities
Employers, and by default HR, are responsible for ensuring that the terms of employment offered meet Swedish standards and that they are maintained throughout the employment period. Employers/HR also need to ensure that the international employee is registered with the Swedish tax office.
Any oversights can lead to serious consequences, such as your international hire being forced to leave the country. This can happen even if the mistake was unintentional and due to inexperience. The responsibility is always on the employer’s side and inaccurate or incomplete information are not deemed to be acceptable excuses by the Swedish Migration Agency. Enlisting expert help is therefore always the best way to ensure a smooth application process.
