Take 4 for $400 000

What will $400 000 buy in Sweden?

Are you considering buying a house in Sweden? Here’s a quick guide to how far your budget will stretch, based on the latest prices and four sample properties currently available across the country.

A challenging budget for major Swedish Cities

Although $400 000 comfortably covers the average price of a house nationally, it falls significantly short of the average cost of a house in any of Sweden’s three largest cities. Unsurprisingly, there’s a big difference between house prices in and outside of urban areas, but also between different regions in Sweden.

Average House Prices in Sweden

Here are the latest figures for house sales in Sweden:
Stockholm      7 210 000 SEK  (651,850 USD)
Gothenburg    5 593 000 SEK  (505,659 USD)
Malmö            5 092 000 SEK  (460,386 USD)
Nationwide    3 921 000 SEK (354,478 USD)

Source: Svensk Mäklarstatistik, January 2025
Note: 400 000 USD converts to  4 411 860 SEK or 384 262 Euro at date of publication

It’s also worth noting that property prices advertised in Sweden are often viewed as starting prices, especially in cities. Bidding situations often arise and popular properties can sell for considerably more than the advertised price.
