New Salary Requirement for Work Permits

Sweden has raised the work permit salary threshold to almost 30,000 SEK this week. The previous minimum salary requirement was 28,480 SEK before tax, but as of 17th June 2025 it has been increased to 29,680 SEK.

Statistics Sweden (SCB) lies behind the change. It released fresh median salary figures this week, which are used as the basis for the Swedish work permit salary requirement, thereby pushing up the threshold for all new applicants with immediate effect.

Sweden’s median salary rose to 37,100 kronor in 2024, according to these latest figures posted by Statistics Sweden and the salary threshold for a work permit is 80% of the median salary. Salaries also need to be in line with industry standards or collective bargaining agreements.

The new figure does not affect applications which are already in progress as the most recently published median salary at the time of application (not the time of a decision) is the determining figure. The next median salary update will be published by Statistics Sweden in June 2026.

The Swedish government also plans to raise the work permit threshold for new permits to 100 percent of the median salary at the time of application, with exemptions for some categories of workers. This has not yet however been formalised or implemented. There has also been discussion about a grace period of one year for work permit renewal when this proposed change is implemented.
